History
German immigrants founded the city in 1857, and it was incorporated as a city in 1876. The name Anaheim is derived from the nearby Santa Ana River and the German word "heim," which means "home." In its early days, the city was known as a wine-producing region, but most grapevines were killed by disease in the late 1800s. Later, productive citrus groves developed. With the opening of Disneyland in the 1950s, the city began a period of expansion. It underwent extensive redevelopment during the 1970s, and revitalization of the downtown area began in the early 1990s.
